Book signing slated at Mangham Library

A book/review program for authors Lillian Laird Duff and Linda Duff Niemeir will be held from 10 to noon Aug. 5 at the Richland Parish Library Mangham Branch at 302 Hixon St., in Mangham.

There will be a special reading, followed by a time for questions and answers. Books will be available at that time. Paperback issues are $13.

COA supplies elderly with box fans

The Richland Voluntary Council on Aging is helping seniors beat the heat this summer.

COA executive director Beth Whatley has organized the charitable donation of 40 box fans to be given out to those in need over the summer. The COA along with Bayou Bingo, the Richland Arts Council and the Rayville High School Boosters are purchasing 30 fans. Wal-Mart has donated 10 more fans to complete this first round of giving to those in need. The COA is also accepting donations for the purchase of fans.

The Rayville Police Department made the following arrests for the week of July 18-25.

• Rocky Hunter, 44, 310 Jones St., Rayville; disturbing the peace and battery.

• Jennifer West, 31, 207 Whatley St., Rayville; driving under suspension.

• Sequoia Sledge, 26, 316 Russell St., Apt. #50, Rayville; no driver’s license.

• Caleb Thornhill, 22, 414 Hwy. 3048, Rayville; driving under suspension.

• Lestavion Tugler, 25, 2909 Maddox St., Monroe; no driver’s license.

• El Marco Richardson, 33, 705 Rowan St., Monroe; driving under suspension.

Expert provides tips for summer lawn maintenance

Summer is prime growing season for lawns in Louisiana.

Following a few basic tips will help insure a healthy lawn throughout the remaining growing season.

If spring fertilizer applications were missed, there is still time to fertilize and get lawns in good shape for the fall.

Slow release, turf blend fertilizer is best and worth the extra cost and are available at many garden centers and feed stores.

However, normal formulated fertilizers may be used successfully to maintain lawns.

Harrell retires after 32 years with Louisiana State Police
Lt. Lee Harrell of the Louisiana State Police was honored by his employees with a retirement luncheon July 16 at the Mangham Community Center.

Harrell retired with 32 years of law enforcement experience. Approximately 125 friends, colleagues and law enforcement officers from eight parishes attended, including Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell and Ouachita Parish Sheriff Royce Toney.

Several state police officials from Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles and Alexandria also attended.
