Lamb Weston ready to hire as walls go up

ConAgra Lamb Weston is planning to hold its grand opening ceremonies Nov. 5-6 in Delhi but plant officials say the hiring will begin much sooner.

“We’ve been doing a lot of site preparation, putting in underground utilities and we’re putting up the walls now,” plant manager Doug Beyer said during a tour of the plant Thursday.

Beyer plans called for the sweet potato processing facility to be completed in the fall in time to begin training employees before it officially opened.

Hiring will begin with a series of job fairs March 29.

Lamb Weston sets job fairs

ConAgra Lamb Weston is ready to begin seeking employees for its new sweet potato processing plant in Dunn.

The company will host job fairs in five towns from 2-7 p.m. March 29 through April 2.

The first fair will be held March 29 at the Delhi Civic Center. On March 30, the next fair will be held at the Tallulah-Madison Community Center in Tallulah.

A job far will be held at the Monroe Civic Center March 31 followed by one at River of Life Church in Winnsboro on April 1.

The final job far will be held at the Rayville Civic Center on April 2.

Richland unemployment reaches 12 percent

Richland Parish’s unemployment rose to 12 percent during January according to the latest figures from the Louisiana Workforce Commission.

The unemployment figure for the parish was 10.3 percent in December and 9 percent a year ago.

That translates into 1,069 people looking for work in Richland Parish in January as opposed to 914 in December and 786 a year ago.

Currently, 7,857 people are employed in the parish. This is down from 7,959 in December and 7,941 a year ago.

Students prepare for state testing

Students in Richland Parish Schools will soon be participating in Spring 2010 Testing for iLEAP, LEAP, GEE, and LAA 2.

The Richland Parish School District will be administering Phase 1 of Spring 2010 State Testing on March 23, 2010. Phase I Testing will consist of English Language Arts, Writing, and Mathematics Constructed Response Items for LEAP as well as Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies Constructed Response Items for GEE. Phase 2 of Spring 2010 State Testing will be administered on April 12-16. Phase 2 Testing will consist of all remaining test items.

Road work underway at Rayville railroad crossing

A Kansas City Southern Railroad and Louisiana DOTD crew works to smooth down the hump where the the Louisa Street crosses the tracks in Rayivlle. The improvements are an attempt to stop tractor-trailer rigs with long beds from getting hunt up on the road as they cross.
