Sheriff reports on office’s activity in 2011

For the year 2011, the Richland Parish Sheriffs Department made a total of 572 arrest that fit the criteria of the FBI’S Uniform Crime Reports.

Included in these arrests are:

• Drugs and drug related: 104 arrests on 93 cases by our Drug Enforcement Unit. This includes 36 marijuana, nine methamphetamine, 36 cocaine, 10 pill related and two obtaining CDS by fraud cases.

• Theft: 31.

• Burglary: 25. This includes residential/commercial/vehicle burglaries.

• Rape/Sex Offense: Eight reported and eight arrests.

• Assault/Battery: 19 arrests.

• DWI: 76 arrests.

Mangham man thought missing in Mississippi

Law enforcement agents are looking for a Mangham man who’s vehicle was found abandoned on Kingston Road in Adams County, Miss., last week.

The Adams County, Miss., Sheriff’s Office received a report about an abandoned vehicle on Kingston Road on Jan. 25. After investigation by the responding deputies, the vehicle was linked to a Shaun Thornhill, 41, of 176 Hwy 132, Mangham. ACSO deputies and members of Adams County’s Search and Rescue Team have searched more than 600 acres of ground in the woods along Kingston Thursday and Friday.

Jobless rate up slightly

Unemployment in Richland Parish rose only a tenth of a percent in December according to the latest figures from the Louisiana Works Commission.

Richland Parish’s unemployment rate moved from 8.8 percent in November to 8.9 percent in December. This is down from 10.5 percent in December 2010.

Currently 787 people are looking for work in Richland Parish, up from 785 in November but down greatly from 980 in December 2010.

The parish’s current workforce is 8,047 as opposed to 8,121 in December and 8,339 a year ago.

Newsom named Riverfield head coach

Rob Newsom has been named head football coach at Riverfield Academy.

He and his wife, Tina Trichel Newsom, have three boys whose names are David, Jonathan and Nathan. His parents, Bill and Annette Newsom of Rayville, enrolled him in Riverfield Academy for the fifth grade in 1975 and he remained a student there until he graduated in 1986. He is thrilled to be the head coach at his alma mater.

Deputies arrest Rayville man for dog fighting

Deputies arrested a Rayville man for participating in a dog fight Sunday.

Richland Parish Chief Deputy Terry Thompson said the sheriff’s office received a complain about a disturbance at 112 Ruth St., Rayville, about 8 p.m. Monday night.

“Deputy Frank Marble responded and observed five or six males standing around a dog fighting pit,” Thompson said.

All of the men ran when they spotted the deputy watching them. Marble then called for backup and deputies Terry Parrish and Frank Smith arrived at the crime scene.
