Suspect arrested in rash of Delhi break-ins

Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a series of burglaries in Delhi.

Moses S. Montgomery, 24, of 227 Fifth St., Delhi, was arrested July 20 and charged with four counts of burglary. He was booked into the Richland Parish Detention Center without bond.

Richland Parish Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Terry Thompson said Montgomery had confessed to those four burglaries and further investigations are continuing.

“We actually developed him as a suspect during in investigation of a home invasion north of town,” Thompson said. “Investigators Frank Jones and Gary Gilley were looking into that case when they developed evidence he was involved in the others.”

Delhi Police Sgt. Marie Stubblefield and Sheriff’s Deputy Roy Williams also assisted in the investigation.

Deputies believe the burglars didn’t realize anyone was home during the home invasion and fled after realizing there as someone in the house.

Montgomery hasn’t been charged with the home invasion. However, Thompson said, he did confess to the other four burglaries.

“We also had two more burglaries Monday,” Thompson added. “We don’t want to panic people but we would like to warn citizens to be vigilant. They should keep a lookout for strange vehicles in the area and people stopping to ask directions or looking for other information.”

Thompson said deputies think the burglars have been knocking on doors and if someone answers, they pretend to be lost or ask for directions or other information. If no one is home, in at least two cases, they have kicked in the front door and attempted to burglarize the house.

“We’re also suggesting that people check their burglar alarms,” Thompson said. “In one the cases we’ve investigated, the homeowner had just had their burglar alarm system checked and discovered it wasn’t working.”
